WHAT SHOULD I DO FIRST?
1. Get Attorney Advice - Remember, all attorneys offer free consultations. I will be happy to give you a free consultation even if you don't expect to be able to afford my services. When hiring an attorney, do it promptly and your question won't be do I need an attorney, but who shall I hire.
2. Stop All Alcohol and Drug Use - You must be clean and sober until your case is concluded. You will be asked to submit to urine tests.
3. Start writing out your story about your stop and arrest. (Click HERE for instructions)
WAYS TO FIND AN ATTORNEY
REFERRALS
Seeking a referral from someone with court and/or DUI experience is the best way to locate your attorney. You can ask friends, co-workers or people in the courts such as police officers, court clerks, probation officers or judges. People from the legal system may be uncomfortable recommending a specific attorney, but they will usually give you a list of local attorneys or help you rank the attorneys you are considering. The Bar Association and professional referral services will give you a name, but they usually have lists of newer attorneys and give you whomever is next on their list.
COMPUTER
You are already checking web sites and that's a good way to find local attorney names, as well as find out specialties, experience and fees. You should still compare your web list to any suggested personal referrals. Also, some attorneys advertise a location even though their office and practice are far away in another city or county. Always ask where the attorney'sactual office is located.
ADVERTISING
The phone books have ads as well as phone numbers, but remember those ads are very expensive and you don't want to be paying their costs.
FREE ATTORNEY
If you are indigent (without income or assets) you can ask the judge for a referral to the local public defender agency, but not until you make your first appearance in court (usually called an arraignment). You need advice now and you may contact me for FREE advice now, even if you don't expect to be able to afford my services. Public defenders are only available for criminal or criminal traffic charges and they are not allowed to handle your civil issues such as Department of Licensing suspension hearings and traffic infractions. Also, your first court appearance may not occur until it's too late to challenge an administrative suspension or traffic citation, and after the Department of Licensing has already suspended your privilege to drive.
LAST - BE CAUTIOUS
Most attorneys still accept DUI cases even though they aren't particularly experienced and would suggest a different attorney for their friends or family members. Make your choice quickly but carefully.
WHY SHOULD YOU HIRE MIKE JONES?
EXPERIENCE
I have over 40 years of in-court DUI trial experience in Washington State and Municipal and Tribal Courts and I have successfully tried thousands of DUI cases.
EMPHASIS
I accept only criminal cases and my practice emphasizes DUI and related crimes.
LOCAL
I accept cases all over Washington State and regularly appear in all courts in Snohomish, King, Skagit and Island Counties. I encourage drivers needing an attorney for a court more than 50 miles from my Everett office to let me suggest a more local attorney. I enjoy appearing in other courts; however, the added costs in time and travel will usually increase your charge for attorney fees.
